“Are you sure you wanna do this?” said the computer. It was the twentieth time Ali asked and each time he phrased it differently. Something told Nina he was actually enjoying it. He sounded way too cheerful for an AI locked up in the Pure Alliance Compliance Centre, the infamous PACC. The occupants preferred to call it Pisspot Asylum Crushing Citizenry. That was the mild version.
“Are you sure it is the right course of action?” or he was testing her anger treshold.
“Shut up Ali.” she said, gritting her teeth and typing furiously.
“You are playing with the Universe, Nina.” Ali wouldn’t give up.
“Shut. The. Fuck. Up.” of course she was playing with the Universe. That was the only way to get out of this shithole.
It had been three years since Nina was caught and assigned to PACC. She didn’t break any intergalactic laws, she was just ‘abnormal’. Apparently when you’re a genius hacker they tend to label you as dangerous. Then they kidnap and lock you away with the rest of the potential miscreants, as they called it.
Nina still remembered the day they came for her. It was her fifteenth birthday. All the security she installed didn’t matter. She wanted to spoil herself for once, so she foolishly ordered a Gnuvian cupcake, one of the most expensive delicacies in the Runic Galaxy. As she opened the door for the delivery man, he shot her with that satisfied smirk all the bounty hunters get when they win their prize. The bastard ate the cupcake right in front of her paralyzed body .
“You will have a hundred seconds once you activate the Time Shredder.” said Ali, suddenly serious.
“I know, just monitor the entrance for me. It shouldn’t take them long to figure out I stole that unicom.” Nina typed so fast, the endless lines of code flashed and distorted the holographic screen she used. After all, reshaping information takes a toll on the medium, an issue all too familiar to every codebender.
“You’re the only one left, Nina. It’s only you now.” she said to herself, as she felt panic settling in at the edge of her mind.
