Living Bridge

living bridge

He was lying down awake in his bed, gasping for air like every other morning for the past month. Staring at the ceiling, he counted down anticipating the end of the pain, but this time it never came. One quick shallow breath after the other, he pushed himself up on his elbows, and groaned annoyed at the sweat dripping into his eyes.

The Gap Between Fanfiction, Literature, and Modern Day Writing

I was going to write on the subject of fan-fiction, since I’ve encountered many people who consider fan-fiction to be trashy. However, in my research I’ve stumbled upon this article- a great piece on why fan-fiction shouldn’t be degraded and considered a lower art form.

The Geek Girl Senshi

Fan fiction gets a lot of weird looks. From the predominately slashy nature of the writing to the more recent exposure associated with “50 Shades of Grey”, it’s understandable that people outside of fandoms just don’t get it. Fanfiction can be an alien concept to those outside of fandom, but here are a few names a lot of people are familiar with: Charles Dickens, Homer, and  H.P. Lovecraft. All considered classic authors that have  something in common with modern day fanfiction.

My Thoughts On Cultural Appropriation

…In the context of the recent Coldplay music video “Hymn for the Weekend” featuring Bayonce:

This video has sparked controversy in the beautiful and as always judgement-free Web sphere, with people on one side accusing it of appropriating Indian culture, while others hailing it instead as cultural appreciation.

A Reply to Lauren Southern’s “Why I’m Not a Feminist”

When I first watched Lauren’s video, it resonated in some ways with how I felt about feminism. Still, after taking a gender studies unit at my university, there were things she was saying that did not add up. Feminism is such a touchy subject, and is misused and misunderstood by many. This response is long, but on point and has the appropriate evidence. One thing I will always believe in is that men need to be part of fighting for equality as much as women.

Everyday Geopolitics Houston

Dear Lauren,

In the last couple days, I have seen your video “Why I’m Not a Feminist” pop up a few times. In the video, you describe why you are not a feminist. At the heart of your message is the assertion, “I am not a feminist because I believe both genders should be treated equally.” Setting aside for a moment the problems with your assumption that gender can be reduced to a binary of male/female (here’s a decent introduction to that if you want), I want to talk about the misinformation you offer in your video: misinformation about feminist activism and scholarship, and misinformation about domestic violence and rape. I don’t often find engaging in these types debates online to be the most fruitful use of my energies, since people that produce anti-feminist content generally are not very open to meaningful engagement with feminist thought, however I’ve been stewing over your…

Grampy

There was not enough time.
Where are the tears?
I should be there by your side.
Ah, there they are.
Why didn’t I call earlier?
They are burning my face.
I should have asked to Skype him.
They stopped suddenly.
Granny.
I feel numb.
I need to call her.
What’s wrong with my body?
Grampy, I miss you.
Are those limbs mine?
I want to hold you one last time.
I’m sorry.

“Chivalry is Dead”

Yes, it is. As it should be.

(Unless you are reenacting medieval culture)

Let’s backtrack a little. Women’s outcry about the death of chivalry, has been both prominent on social media as well as in public spaces and it’s an issue I felt I needed to address. Here, let me give you an example:
